Job Interview Tips - How to Handle Interview Nerves

If someone tells you they don't get nervous about job interviews, don't believe them. We all do.

Here are some ideas for how to overcome your nerves and perform as well as possible.

1. Arrive early enough so you don't have to go straight into the office, give yourself time to walk around the block first and get yourself ready.

2. S.T.O.P

  • Stop and focus on your thoughts.

  • Take some deep breaths.

  • Observe what’s going on in your body, emotions, and mind, and why you’re feeling them.

  • Proceed with an intention to incorporate what you observed in your actions.

This allows you to slow down and think and get back in control so you can get rid of your doubts, and nerves

3. Be prepared; by knowing the address and time of the interview, the interviewer's name, and, most of all, by spending time thinking about how to answer the most likely interview questions and thinking of questions of your own.

4. Have something to look forward to after the interview, something to do in the afternoon or evening. Even if you have to go straight back to work, buy yourself a treat on the way back.

5. Don't go into the interview hungry. The last thing you want is to sit there thinking about how much you want to have something to eat, or worrying about the interviewer hearing your stomach rumble!

6. Boost your own confidence by telling yourself how good you are, how prepared you are, how suitable for the job your experience and personality are.

7. Or get someone else to boost your confidence for you - your partner, friend, mum, etc.

8. Smile -  Smiling is good for you and increases your confidence, and it also makes the interviewer like you more!

9. Finally, you're not about to do something dangerous; it's just you in a room talking to some people about the subject you know most about - you.

And remember, you've been invited to the interview because they like what they know about you so far and now want to hear more. They really want you to do well and hope that you're going to be the best person for the job.

And, they'll also be nervous because you've got a list of questions you want them to answer too so you can decide if they're good enough for you to work for...
