JAPAN – GOVERNMENT TO DEVELOP LEGISLATION SO MALE WORKERS CAN TAKE PATERNITY LEAVE (MAINICHI)

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is set to develop legislation to promote more male workers in Japan to take child care leave, reports Mainichi. The ministry will consider obliging companies to notify their employees about their right to take paternity leave, as well as raising the amount of child care benefits paid to workers on leave. The ministry intends to submit a bill to revise the act on child care and caregiver leave to the ordinary session of the Diet (Japan’s bicameral legislature) as early as in 2021. The ratio of child care leave among male workers in Japan stands at 6% as of October 2018, while the figure for women is 82%. Meanwhile, 90% of working mothers take child care leave for at least six months while 60% of their male counterparts take less than five days.
